Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet are the most effective ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, immune system and liver. There’s been evidence to suggest that exercise itself (with or without weight loss) can prevent and reverse fatty liver disease and boost your immune system.

Now, if you suffer from liver disease, exercise is probably the last thing you want to do. But, you must force yourself to get up and do it. Once you get going, your energy will pick up and the positive domino effect is all there waiting!

Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. If you currently do no physical activity, start by doing some, and gradually build up to the recommended amount.

Start with gentle exercise and slowly build up to establishing a routine. But don’t overdo it – too much strenuous exercise can have a negative impact – making you feel tired and rundown.

Find the exercises that are right for you. A variety will keep you engaged and can provide more enjoyment than focusing on one type of exercise. So, for example, in any given week, you can be walking, cycling, jogging, doing yoga, dancing, gardening…yes, gardening is a form of exercise!

Below is just a short list of liver benefits associated with regular exercise:

  • Enhanced blood oxygenation
  • Elevated mood
  • Reduced risk of scarring and cirrhosis in Hepatitis C
  • Reduced muscle atrophy
  • Improved energy

Oh – and, keep well hydrated. Get adequate sleep!
